Paper Mill Powered by Hydro

When we were visiting my hometown of Niles, Michigan, we went on a tour of the French Paper Company's mill with 6th generation paper maker, Brian French. It was an exciting field trip while Brian showed us enormous vats of pulp and huge hot machines all powered by hydro.

Established in 1871, French Paper is a sixth-generation, family-owned American company. French Paper Company has been manufacturing paper for more than 140 years in the same community of Niles, Michigan. In an industry known for corporate acquisitions and shutdowns, French Paper has persevered, emerging as one of the strongest, smartest, and most consistent paper brands around.

Remaining as one of the last, small, independent mills in America, French Paper has learned to take their direction from customers, not corporate consultants. They keep their eye on the bottom line by improving their product lines, and when they talk about stock, they mean papers, not shareholder value.

Agua Fria Freddie 2014 - Arizona's Version of Groundhog Day

While Punxsutawney Phil is famous for his annual weather prognostications on February 2nd, he lacks knowledge of weather in Arizona.

Legend has it that a lesser-known prognosticator lives right here in Arizona with a 95% accuracy rate.

Locals know him as Agua Fria Freddie, a shadow-seeking rattlesnake that comes out every year on February 2^nd to predict the coming of Spring to us desert-dwellers.

This event is actually a non-event, as we cannot find record of any gathering to watch this legend search for his shadow. There are some legitimate reasons for not having an actual event to celebrate his findings this year.

Nobody ever volunteers to get close enough to look for the shadow of a rattlesnake.
Tourists are already in shorts and t-shirts so they don't care
The big party is at the Phoenix Open Golf Tournament
Football fans are focused on Super Bowl XLVIII

Rustler’s Rooste got to Freddie first and he’s an appetizer

It’s not difficult to predict when Spring will arrive in Arizona when the sun shines about 300 days a year, but it is comforting to know that Agua Fria Freddie is watching out for us. Just watch out for him the other 364 days a year when you’re hiking around South Mountain.

We hear that the TV stations in Phoenix are hiring Tukee the weather parrot to fill in over the Summer.

George Washington was the first president of the United States of America. His first term as president was from 1789 to 1793 and his second term from 1793 to 1797. Before he became president, he played important roles in the military, leading the American Continental Army to victory over the British in 1783. Happy Birthday Abe Lincoln

Lincoln’s Birthday is a public holiday in the following states on February 12:

Connecticut.
Illinois.
Missouri.
New Jersey.
New York (Lincoln's Birthday is a floating holiday for state government employees in certain bargaining units).

How to Convert your Personal Pinterest Account to Business

I just finished our Pinterest conversion and it was painless.

We had an existing account on Pinterest, but if you don't yet, you can set up one on the business site.

While I was going through the process starting on the Pinterest for Business Page I grabbed a few screen shots to show how easy it was.

Here are the steps:

Step 1: Start on this page and Click the red 'Convert your existing account' button.

Step 2: Next, select the 'Business Type' that best explains what you do. Markit has both an e-commerce website and we operate offline in the real face-to-face world too. For our purposes, it makes sense to choose 'Online Marketplace' so we can share and showcase our online promotional products catalog.

Step 4: Read the small print and if you agree, accept the agreement.

Step 5: Update your 'Profile' if necessary. Ours auto-filled with information I had created earlier. It's still relevant, so no changes there. This is how your business will appear on Pinterest.

Then some friendly reassurance with a pleasing confirmation page

Step 6: Next I was asked to verify our website. Pinterest needs to confirm that I have access to our website’s server. If you have a blog, you probably can't do this. If you don't know, you can learn more about verifying your website here.
